What Is Justification?
To be justified in God’s sight means that God declares us righteous and accepts us because of what Jesus Christ has done for us not because of our good works, our performance, or the approval of others.
2 Corinthians 5:21 tells us that God made Christ, who knew no sin, to be sin on our behalf so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Hebrews 10:17 assures us, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” At the cross, Jesus did more than provide forgiveness; through Him we are given a righteous standing before God.
Reflection Questions:
Have I been trying to earn God’s acceptance through my performance or good works?
What does it mean personally to me that Christ took my sin and that I receive a righteous standing through Him?
If God has forgiven me, am I still holding past sins against myself?
Why Do We Need Salvation?
God intended humanity to live in relationship with Him, experiencing His love and fulfilling His purposes, but sin separated us from God. None of us can repair that separation through our own goodness. Isaiah 64:6 reminds us that even our own righteousness cannot make us right before a holy God.
This is why we need a Savior. Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, came into the world, took the penalty for our sins upon Himself on the cross, died in our place, and rose again. Salvation is God’s gift of grace, not something we can earn. We are called to repent—to turn from our sin—and place our faith and trust in Jesus Christ and what He accomplished for us. When we receive Christ by faith, God forgives us, justifies us, gives us new life, and brings us into a right relationship with Himself. Romans 5:1 tells us that, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Reflection Questions:
Am I trusting in Jesus Christ for my salvation, or am I still trusting in my own goodness?
Have I personally repented of my sins and placed my faith in Jesus as my Savior and Lord?
If I stood before God today, what would I say is the reason I can be accepted by Him?
How Does God See Me?
Once we understand justification, we must ask: Do I really believe what God says about me? If the way I see myself is different from the way God sees me, whose view am I going to believe?
Too often we overrule God’s truth with our own thoughts, past experiences, failures, and the opinions of other people. We begin living according to the false formula:
Self-worth = My performance + The opinions of others.
But our true worth and identity are found in what God says about us and what Christ has accomplished for us.
Reflection Questions:
What has been determining my self-worth,God’s truth, my performance, or people’s opinions?
When I fail, do I see something I did as a failure, or do I begin believing that I am a failure?
Whose voice has had the greatest influence on how I see myself?
Possible Obstacles to Receiving God’s Truth
There may be obstacles that keep us from receiving what God says about us. Am I addicted to the approval of others? Am I trying to live by another formula or control everything around me so that I can feel secure? Do I understand God’s truth intellectually but have difficulty receiving His forgiveness, acceptance, and love personally? Have past failures, guilt, shame, or rejection produced a sense of hopelessness in me?
God wants us to recognize these lies and replace them with His truth.
Reflection Questions:
Am I dependent upon someone’s approval to feel valuable or accepted?
What am I trying to control because I am afraid of what might happen if I let go?
Is there something God says about me that I understand in my mind but struggle to believe in my heart?
What lie about myself do I need to replace with God’s truth today?
5. Why Should We Obey God?
If we are already justified and accepted through Christ, why should we obey God? We do not obey Him to earn His love or salvation. We obey because Christ loves us, sin is destructive, and God’s ways are good.
Hebrews 12:5–11 teaches that our loving Father disciplines His children for their good, ultimately producing the peaceful fruit of righteousness. God has also given believers the Holy Spirit, who convicts us of sin, leads us into truth, warns us when we are moving toward destructive choices, and gives us wisdom and strength to follow Christ.
Conviction should not be confused with hopeless condemnation. God’s conviction lovingly shows us what needs to change and calls us back toward Him. We learn to follow the Holy Spirit rather than attempting to live the Christian life entirely in our own strength.
Reflection Questions:
Why am I obeying God—to earn His approval or because I love Him and already know that I am accepted in Christ?
When the Holy Spirit convicts me, do I receive His correction or immediately fall into shame and condemnation?
Is there an area of my life where I know God is asking me to obey Him?
What would following the Holy Spirit look like in that situation?
Eternal Rewards
Another compelling reason to live for God’s glory is that Scripture teaches that there will be eternal rewards for faithful service. Second Corinthians 5:10 tells us that we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ so that each one may be recompensed for what he has done in the body, whether good or bad.
Our works do not purchase our salvation. Rather, because we have been saved by grace, we desire to use the life God has given us for things that have eternal significance.
Reflection Questions:
What am I building with my life right now?
Which things consume my time but may have little eternal value?
What has God entrusted to me that I could use more faithfully for His purposes?
If I stood before Christ today, what would I want Him to say about how I used my life?
Christ Is Worthy
There is an even greater motivation than receiving rewards: Christ Himself is worthy. Jesus is the Lamb of God who came to take away the sin of the world. He is worthy of our affection, love, worship, and obedience.
No person, achievement, goal, fame, status, or material possession can compare with Him. Psalm 73:25 expresses the heart we desire to have: “Whom have I in heaven but Thee? And besides Thee, I desire nothing on earth.”
Obeying Christ produces a deep and lasting joy as we learn to live for His pleasure and glory. The Holy Spirit gives us encouragement, wisdom, guidance, and strength as our desire to honor the Lord grows. We do not live for Christ merely because of what He can give us. We live for Him because of who He is. He is worthy.
Reflection Questions:
Is Jesus Himself my greatest treasure, or have I allowed something else to become more important to me?
What person, possession, achievement, status, or goal competes for the affection that belongs to Christ?
What would change in my daily life if my deepest desire became simply to honor Jesus?
Salvation Invitation
If you have never personally trusted Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord, you can respond to Him. The question is not, “Have I been good enough?” The question is, “Have I put my faith in Jesus Christ?”
You can come to Him by acknowledging your sin and your inability to save yourself, believing that Jesus died for your sins and rose again, repenting and turning toward God, and placing your faith and trust in Christ.
Reflection Questions:
Have I personally placed my faith in Jesus Christ, or do I simply know information about Him?
Is there anything preventing me from surrendering my life completely to Christ today?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner and cannot save myself. I believe that You died on the cross for my sins and rose again. I repent of my sins and place my faith and trust in You. Please forgive me, give me new life, and be my Savior and Lord. I surrender my life to You. Help me through Your Holy Spirit to follow You, believe Your truth, and live for Your glory. Thank You for Your forgiveness, grace, and love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Final Reflection
If I truly believed today that I am forgiven, justified, accepted, and loved through Jesus Christ, what would change about the way I see myself, the way I respond to other people’s opinions, the choices I make?
